On 25 February, SCA permanently closed paper machine LWC 4 at the Ortviken paper mill. This marked the end of SCA's entire publication paper production.
SCA started publication paper production at Ortviken in 1958. Since then, the mill had grown into one of the world's largest publication paper production sites with an annual production capacity of 800,000 t. Structural changes, accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, have forced SCA to exit publication paper production.
The company is now investing SEK1.45bn to convert Ortviken to the production of chemically pre-treated thermo-mechanical pulp (CTMP). At the same time, company Renewcell is building a production line for the recycling of textile fibres on the site.
